Nurse Workforce Initiative – Award List and
Project Summaries
In September 29, 2002, Nurse Workforce Initiative grants were awarded to thirteen
partnerships, represented by the following organizations.
The primary goal of each project is to increase the pool of licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and
registered nurses (RNs). Project descriptions, award amounts, and contact information are provided
below.

Summary: The Region 7 Nursing Workforce Initiative project will
produce 185 new LVNs and RNs by providing training and supportive services to incumbent health-care
workers, students, former nurses, and other adults. Using an empirical approach to the understanding
of nurse workforce issues, this creative project will develop pilot programs to test the viability
of different service strategies. |

Summary: The RN Internship in Pediatrics project will focus on
nurse retention through workplace reforms. The project will assist 99 recent RN graduates to pass
the RN licensing exam and succeed in the workplace. Assessment measures will be used before,
during, and after the project to evaluate the project’s progress and outcomes. |

Summary: Based on a "grow your own philosophy," the
Central California Paradigm Program will provide career ladder upgrade training to LVNs and
other incumbent health-care workers, resulting in 65 newly licensed RNs. |

Summary: The NWI-NBEC project will produce 227 LVNs and RNs by
providing training and supportive services to incumbent health-care workers and other adults. This
comprehensive, research-oriented project benefits from strong union and employer involvement.
The NWI-NBEC project will build on the successes of the partnership’s CTI project,
implementing an eight-point strategy for long-term goals. |

Summary: The NCEN Nursing Workforce Initiative project will
develop and implement career ladders training to upgrade a combined total of 185 incumbent certified
nursing assistants (CNAs) and LVNs, from CNA to LVN positions, or LVN to RN positions. Another 15
adults, who are not currently CNAs or LVNs, will be trained and licensed as LVNs. This project will
be building on the successes of the partnership’s Caregiver Training Initiative (CTI) project. |

Summary: Targeting mostly nursing students, the Orange County –
Long Beach Nurse Training Collaboration will produce 99 new LVNs and RNs, assist 15 two-year
RNs in completing training in a four-year RN program, and train an additional 220 RNs for preceptor
or specialty nurse certification. |

Summary:The Preceptor Training project will focus on licensed
nurse retention and project sustainability through the creation of a nurse preceptor program,
with a standardized curriculum and trained faculty in place. This project will train 300 nurses to
be preceptors, and 15 hospital-based in-service educators to be preceptor trainers. |

Summary: This NEW EDGE project will focus on career ladder
upgrade training to incumbent health-care workers and to corpsmen and corpswomen at the Marine Base
Naval Hospital in Twenty-Nine Palms. The project will produce 120 new nurse licensees. This
project will make use of a mobile One-Stop Career Center to recruit and serve participants from
rural areas, and will benefit from the oversight of the NEW EDGE Quality Board. |

project will be on career ladder upgrades. The project also will offer creative strategies for

licensed RNs. Additionally, the project will recruit qualified foreign and re-entry nurses who, as
a result of the project, will further increase the area’s nurse workforce by an additional 20 nurse
licensees. The project will test two different nurse retention models, and will benefit from the
oversight of the NEW EDGE Quality Board. |

project will include an in-depth analysis of project performance, and will use an independent
evaluator to conduct a customer satisfaction survey. |

Summary: Building on the successful SELACO WIB CTI project, the
SELACO WIB Region 8 Training Collaboration project will target incumbent CNAs and LVNs for
career ladder upgrade training, which will result in 154 new LVNs and RNs. This project will focus
heavily on quality self-assessment tools for performance evaluation. |

Summary: The Central California Educators and Partners Nurse
Workforce Initiative project will train students, incumbent health-care workers, and other
adults, producing 200 new LVNs and RNs. An additional 15 incumbent licensed nurses will receive
career ladder upgrade training and obtain nursing specialty certification. To overcome distance,
isolation, and transportation barriers problematic in California’s Central Valley, this project
will make use of technological tools such as distance learning. This project will build on the
successes of the partnership’s CTI and earlier NWI projects. |
