Rural Nursing Clinical Simulation Center Grants – Award List and Project Summaries

On June 20, 2006, grants were awarded to three organizations under the Migrant/ Seasonal Farmworker Solicitation. Project descriptions, award amounts, and contact information are listed below.

Coalition Partners: California State University, Chico School of Nursing, Enloe Medical Center, Butte College Nursing Department, Feather River Hospital, and First Responder Emergency Medical Services

Award Amount: $249,999

Summary: Three human patient simulators will be installed at the premises of one of the project partners, the Enloe Medical Center. Nursing students from CSU, Chico and Butte Community College will make use of this equipment to meet part of their clinical practicum requirement to become Registered Nurses. During the 2007-08 school year, the availability of human patient simulators is expected to allow the enrollment of an additional ten nursing students, and during the 2008-09 school year the enrollment of 30 additional nursing students is projected. This resource will also be available to the staff of coalition partners to develop and maintain clinical competency.

The contractor is expected to provide a full time coordinator and a half-time technician who will ensure substantially full-time utilization of the simulation equipment.

The colleges are expected to adapt their Registered Nursing training curriculum to reflect the availability of the nursing simulation equipment which is being provided with resources made available by this sub-grant.

Sierra Community College District, Lake Tahoe Community College Campus

Coalition Partners: Lake Tahoe Community College, Barton Memorial Hospital, and Marshall Hospital

Award Amount: $250,000

Summary: Three human patient simulators will be installed at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. The main beneficiaries of the use of this equipment are enrollees at Lake Tahoe Community College who are enrolled on a distant on-line basis in the Sierra College Associate Degree in Nursing program. In addition to benefiting current students, it is projected that ten additional students will be enrolled each year because of the availability of the human patient simulators. This resource will also be available to the staff of coalition partners to develop and maintain clinical competency.

The college is expected to provide a full time coordinator and a half-time technician who will ensure substantially full-time utilization of the simulation equipment.

Summary: Three human patient simulators will be installed at the Sonora Regional Medical Center. The level of additional enrollment in Registered Nurse training due to availability of this equipment is projected to be ten each semester. This resource will also be available to the staff of coalition partners to develop and maintain clinical competency.

The college is expected to provide a full time coordinator and a half-time technician who will ensure substantially full-time utilization of the simulation equipment.

The college is expected to adapt its Registered Nursing training curriculum to reflect the availability of the nursing simulation equipment which is being provided with resources made available by this sub-grant.
