On June 20, 2006, grants were awarded to three organizations under the Migrant/ Seasonal Farmworker Solicitation. Project descriptions, award amounts, and contact information are listed below.

Summary:  The California Human Development Corporation and partners will purchase and operate a hi-tech mobile classroom - Jobs on Wheels - and provide core, intensive and training services to the agricultural community of northern California.  The Jobs on Wheels will extend the reach of Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and WIA partners by providing core services to 250 farmworkers and other rural poor.  Jobs on Wheels will work with agricultural employers to deliver on-site, customized programs of workplace literacy, English as a second language, safety instruction, and on-the-job training to 150 farmworkers.  Outcomes include referrals of farmworkers to the One-Stop system, skill building, employability enhancements, and job placements, including upgraded agricultural employment.

Summary: Central Valley Opportunity Center (CVOC) will operate a comprehensive farmworker vocational development and placement project.  Working in cooperation with the local workforce investment boards, the project will enhance One-Stop farmworker service capabilities through rural outreach, bilingual staff and co-enrollment.  The project will co-enroll project customers in local workforce investment areas and Community Services Block Grant vocational services, and utilize a variety of community services to resolve employment barriers.  The project will target farmworker job placement in emerging growth occupations inside and outside of agriculture.  The project will provide vocational skills training, remedial education and language skills.  CVOC will enhance existing farmworker service structures and expand the number of farmworkers served.

Summary:  Proteus Incorporated will assist migrant/seasonal farmworkers and their families in attaining greater economic stability in the agriculture industry.  This project will demonstrate that stabilization and upgrade within agriculture is a feasible option that will meet employers’ needs and provide opportunities to farmworkers seeking a better job within the agriculture industry.  Through this project, we plan to help stabilize and increase year round employment opportunities for 114 participants in the counties of Tulare, Kings, and Fresno.
