This information will help you use our automated telephone system. Before you dial our toll-free 800 numbers, please take the time to review this information. You will then be prepared to make the selection you need when calling the EDD.

After a greeting in English and Spanish, you will be asked to:

  • Press 1 to hear the recording in English
  • Press 2 to hear the recording in Spanish

You must make a valid language selection or you will be disconnected.

After your selection the telephone plays your language and you can reach a representative who speaks your language.

Special announcements may play before the main menu. If you know the main menu selection you want, you can press the number and bypass the recording. After you make a main menu selection, please listen. You may need to make further choices.

Your telephone selections ensure your call is transferred the best location with the shortest wait.

The main menu options are:

  • Press 1 for information regarding your unemployment check.
    Unemployment insurance (UI) check information includes the date your last benefit check was issued, the amount paid, and period of time covering the payment.


  • The best time to call on weekdays is between 6 am and 8 am or after 5 pm. You can call at any time on weekends.

    To access confidential information using our automated telephone system, you will be asked to enter your social security number and a personal identification number (PIN) on your telephone keypad. You will set your PIN the first time you use the automated telephone system to access confidential information. For more information about your PIN, see:

  • Press 2 to file a claim, for questions about your existing claim or for general information about unemployment insurance.
    If calling to file or reopen a claim please be prepared to provide the name, address, ZIP Code, and telephone number of your last employer. Select this option:
  • To file, reopen or discuss a claim
  • To hear general UI information
  • When calling in for your interview
  • To reschedule a missed appointment

  • Press 3 if you are an employer.
    Employers select this option for information about UI, for assistance in filling job vacancies, or to obtain the address and telephone number of the closest EDD Job Service Office. Job Service specializes in linking job seekers with job vacancies. See CalJOBS for more information.


  • Press 4 for other EDD services.
    Select this option for:
  • Reporting UI benefits on your Federal Income Tax. (Form 1099g)
  • Unemployment Insurance Benefit Overpayments or to set up repayment plans
  • Disputes with your employer involving wages or working conditions, please call the Labor Commissioner Office as listed in the government section of your white page telephone book.
