Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities

Local/Mayors’ Committees Information

With the passage of Assembly Bill 925 in 2003, the Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities (Governor’s Committee) was given new responsibilities. These responsibilities include advising the Secretaries of the Labor and Workforce Development and the Health and Human Services Agencies on issues around employment of people with disabilities. The legislation reconstituted the Governor’s Committee into an advisory body to the Governor and the Legislature on employment issues for people with disabilities.

This legislation does not continue the affiliation between the Governor’s Committee and the Local Community/Mayor’s Committees. We realize all of the hard work these organizations have accomplished over the years and encourage the continuation of these efforts. To that end the Local Workforce Investment Board Directors have been asked to be receptive to outreach by Local Community/Mayor’s Committees to align their efforts with that of the local workforce investment areas.

In the same manner, the Governor’s Committee is aligning its policy development responsibilities with that of the California Workforce Investment Board. The Governor’s Committee members work closely with members of the State Board to develop policy recommendations that will better serve employer needs by identifying a pool of skilled workers - people with disabilities. Mayor’s Committee chairs have been encouraged to contact the director of their Local Workforce Investment Board to discuss ways in which the local Mayor’s Committee may provide a resource to serving people with disabilities.
