Why Hire Someone With a Disability?

A release issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2002 and 2012, 35 million people will retire or change careers, and employers will need to replace that workforce. Between 2010 and 2030, the American workforce is expected to shrink by 10 percent. Recruiting and retaining workers with disabilities offers a valuable strategy to counter the effects of workforce and skills shortages. Studies show that employees with disabilities perform equally or superior to employees without disabilities. Qualified people with disabilities make excellent employees.

The Governor's Committee offers employers the resources needed to develop an understanding of how people with disabilities can become and remain valuable employees. By increasing employers' awareness of the productivity of this qualified pool of applicants, employment opportunities for people with disabilities will increase as well. Employers throughout California are in search of qualified applicants, and people with disabilities are a segment of the population that remains underutilized. The Governor's Committee is here to help tap this valuable resource by offering:
